About Ben Giaretta

Ben Giaretta is an independent chartered arbitrator and mediator, specializing in international dispute resolution. 

He has a wealth of experience across various sectors, including technology, energy, renewables, construction, mining, M&A, commodities, shipping, finance, and professional services. His dispute resolution work spans the globe, with involvement in commercial and investment treaty arbitrations across Africa, Europe, the Gulf region, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. Ben has published extensively on topics related to arbitration, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and he is a co-author of a leading commentary on the Arbitration Act 1996. For more information see the Publications page.

Before becoming a full-time chartered arbitrator and mediator, Ben built an impressive 27-year career in major international law firms, including 17 years as a partner. During this time he held several senior leadership positions, including as Head of Dispute Resolution, Asia Head of Dispute Resolution, and Head of International Arbitration. He worked in law firms in London for 20 years and in Singapore for 7 years. While working in law firms he was a solicitor advocate, and when he became an independent chartered arbitrator and mediator in 2026 he also became a barrister.

Ben has held senior positions within various ADR organizations, serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), Chair of the London Branch of the CIArb, and a member of the Board of Directors of London International Disputes Week, among other roles.

A British citizen with family ties to Italy and India, Ben currently resides in the UK. He has also previously lived in Singapore, Greece, Malawi, and South Africa.

Ben is a Chartered Arbitrator and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. He is on the panels of arbitrators of many arbitration institutions worldwide. Since his first appointment in 2009, he has been appointed as arbitrator in over 35 cases, serving as presiding arbitrator, party-nominated arbitrator, sole arbitrator, and emergency arbitrator. Ben also accepts appointments as a mediator, offering mediation services to facilitate effective dispute resolution. He trained as a mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre in 2011.
